Singalila Birding

Rhododendron forest on the Singalila Ridge, where pheasants, laughingthrushes and high altitude birds live between Darjeeling and Sandakphu.

About Singalila birding

Singalila birding takes place on the Singalila Ridge in Darjeeling district, West Bengal, along the Nepal border, in Singalila National Park. The birding here is ridge birding, with temperate broad leaved forest, rhododendron and magnolia groves, and alpine vegetation between about 2,400 and 3,600 metres. The classic route runs from Manebhanjan through Tonglu, Tumling, Kalapokhri and Sandakphu to Phalut, and each section changes altitude, forest type and bird list.

The star birds are Himalayan pheasants and forest specialists. Satyr tragopan, blood pheasant and kalij pheasant live in dense forest, while laughingthrushes, fulvettas, yuhinas, warblers and sunbirds work mixed flocks along the ridge. Spring brings rhododendron bloom and song, autumn brings clear views of Everest and Kanchenjunga from Sandakphu, and winter brings a quieter, colder ridge with different high altitude birds. Singalila is also red panda country, so a birding walk often includes red panda signs and, with luck, a sighting.

Singalila birding suits trekkers and birders who enjoy walking, photographers who want pheasants in rhododendron forest, and travellers who want Darjeeling town plus a ridge journey in one trip. It pairs with Darjeeling, Mirik and Sikkim birding, and with a longer Eastern Himalayan trip. Three to five days on the ridge, rather than a single day drive, give a much better chance for tragopan and other shy forest birds.
