Bharatpur’s celebrated wetlands in Rajasthan, where migratory waterfowl, breeding storks and herons gather in a compact, walkable park.
Keoladeo birding takes place in Keoladeo National Park in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of India’s most famous birding destinations. The park is a mosaic of wetlands, woodland, grassland and scrub, with shallow lakes, marshes and heronries that change with water levels and season. It is compact and walkable, which makes it ideal for slow, close birding, unlike a large vehicle safari park.
The star birds are migratory waterfowl in winter, including bar headed geese, northern pintails, shovelers, teals, pochards and wigeons, plus resident breeding birds including painted storks, Asian openbills, darters, cormorants, herons and egrets in heronries. Sarus cranes, the world’s tallest flying bird, are regular in and around the park, and raptors, including greater spotted eagles, marsh harriers and ospreys, hunt over the wetlands. Keoladeo was once famous for Siberian cranes, which no longer visit regularly, but the winter waterfowl spectacle remains one of India’s best.
Keoladeo birding suits all levels, from first time birders to photographers who want close waterbird views, and it pairs with Agra, Delhi and Ranthambore for a classic North India birding and wildlife trip. Two to three days, with early mornings by cycle rickshaw and walks, give a much fuller list than a single afternoon visit, and winter mornings in the park are among the best birding experiences in India.
