Chilika Lake Birding

Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon in Odisha, where flamingos, ducks and waders gather around Nalabana and Mangalajodi.

About Chilika Lake birding

Chilika Lake birding takes place on Chilika Lake in Odisha, Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon, spread across Puri, Khurda and Ganjam districts. The lake is a Ramsar site and one of India’s most important wintering grounds for migratory waterbirds, with Nalabana Island as a bird sanctuary core and Mangalajodi as a community managed wetland on the northern shore. The lake changes with season, tide and freshwater inflow, and birding here is water birding, by boat and from banks, rather than forest birding.

The star birds are greater flamingos, which gather in large numbers, plus northern pintails, shovelers, teals, pochards, gadwalls and a long list of waders, gulls and terns. Painted storks, spoonbills, ibises, herons and egrets work the shallows, while raptors, including ospreys, marsh harriers and greater spotted eagles, hunt over the lake. Mangalajodi is famous for close views of ducks, jacanas, moorhens and purple swamphens from boats and hides, and the lake is also home to Irrawaddy dolphins in the outer channel near Satapada.

Chilika Lake birding suits winter wetland birders, photographers who want flamingos and ducks in open lagoon light, and travellers combining Odisha birding with Puri temple town and Bhubaneswar. It pairs with Similipal for forest birds, and with a longer East India wetland trip. Two days, one for Nalabana by boat and one for Mangalajodi, give a much fuller list than a single short boat trip from one shore.
