Salt flats, seasonal wetlands and grassland in Gujarat, where flamingos, cranes and desert raptors gather in winter.
Little Rann of Kutch birding takes place in the Wild Ass Sanctuary and surrounding wetlands and grasslands in Gujarat, near Dasada and Dhrangadhra. The Little Rann is a seasonal salt desert, with salt flats, called bets, that rise above the surrounding plain, and seasonal wetlands formed by canals and rainwater. In winter it becomes one of India’s best dry country birding landscapes, with waterbirds, cranes, bustards and raptors in the same area.
The star birds are flamingos, demoiselle cranes and common cranes, MacQueen’s bustard, great Indian bustard in the wider region, and a superb raptor list including peregrine falcon, imperial eagle, spotted eagle, steppe eagle, marsh harriers and short eared owl. Wetlands add pelicans, storks, geese and spoonbills, while grasslands add larks, sandgrouse, wheatears and coursers. The Indian wild ass, called khur, is a regular mammal sighting on the same drives, adding a unique mammal to a birding trip.
Little Rann of Kutch birding suits winter birders who want raptors and desert birds, photographers who want flamingos and cranes in open light, and travellers combining Gujarat wetlands with desert birding. It pairs with Khijadia, Great Rann and Bhuj, and with Velavadar for grassland birds. Two to three days, with early mornings for raptors and late afternoons for cranes returning to roost, give a much better list than a single day drive.
